When your clients are under real pressure, they are not operating from one place. Three systems are running simultaneously - and in 25 years of clinical practice, I have found that most coaching only reaches one of them. Here is what you are working with in every session.
System 1

The Survival System

Communicates through physical sensation. When a client is at -4 or -5 on the performance spectrum, this system is dominant. Cognitive tools don't land here. The body has to be the entry point.

System 2

The Feeling System

Communicates through emotion. When your client is flooded, reactive, or disconnected - this system is running the session whether you acknowledge it or not. Regulation here unlocks everything else.

System 3

The Thinking System

Where most coaching lives. Goals, strategy, insight. Powerful - but only accessible when the first two systems are regulated. This is why so much good coaching doesn't stick under real pressure.

This is not a fixed sequence. It is an assessment-driven framework - where I enter depends entirely on where your client is. In 30 minutes, I will show you how it maps onto the work you are already doing and where it changes your decisions inside a session.

Centre

Embody integration yourself first. Your own nervous system regulation is the foundation of the work.

Orient

Assess which of the three systems offers the most accessible entry point. Assessment determines approach, not a fixed formula.

Regulate

Guide the client to the Integration Point where all three systems unite. Uses both top-down AND bottom-up pathways.

Engage

Guide the client into purposeful, values-directed action from their regulated state. Regulation exists in order to Engage.

I spent 25 years in clinical practice - somatic therapy, craniosacral work, trauma-informed work with executives under real pressure. I saw what happens when the nervous system collapses under sustained stress. I learned what coaching alone cannot reach.

When I moved into executive coaching, I carried all of that with me. And I started noticing something coaches don't talk about enough: the clients who drop out, who get referred on, who "aren't ready for coaching right now" - they're not failing. Their nervous systems are just operating in territory that coaching tools were never designed for.
